Some of my favorite jobs are the ones that come together at the last minute, and this was one of them.
A photographer friend referred this wonderful family to me just days before their reunion, and after a quick conversation with the organizer, we made it happen. I'm always grateful when another photographer trusts me enough to recommend me to their clients.
As luck would have it, the weather had other plans.
What started as a typical summer afternoon turned into a storm that was much more intense than anyone expected. Instead of letting it dampen the mood, everyone embraced it. Kids splashed through puddles, cousins laughed together in the rain, and the entire family made the best of a day they had looked forward to for months. I found myself right there with them—camera in hand, getting soaked alongside everyone else.
Then, almost as quickly as it arrived, the rain let up just long enough for us to gather all 45 family members for one large group portrait before the skies opened again. It couldn't have been timed any better.
Of course, I made sure to photograph all of the important family combinations and traditional portraits, but when I looked back through the gallery, the images that stayed with me were the candid ones. Children running without a care in the world, grandparents watching the next generation play, spontaneous laughter, and the kind of moments that can't be posed or recreated.
Those are the photographs that tell the real story of a family reunion.
I'm incredibly thankful this family chose to trust me with documenting such a special day, and I'm equally grateful to my photographer friend for making the introduction. Sometimes the best photographs happen when the day doesn't go according to plan—and this reunion was the perfect reminder of that.
