In the past few months, I’ve had something in the back of my mind. That something was a feeling I would get when traveling day to day places. I had it in my mind that I wanted to start photographing couples in non-conventional spaces. While I love photographing in fields and parks, I always wanted to try somewhere unique. The universe musta heard my thoughts and this past weekend I got to photograph Joyce and Kevin at IKEA. Inspired by 500 days of summer, they wanted to have their engagement session there.Being as this was my first time there in god knows how long, I wanted to incorporate the elegance of design as well as them in the respective spaces that were set before us. I loved this session so much and hope this trend continues of cool places to shoot.

While I was in Portland recently, I got to meet Kimi, Nate, and their two beautiful children through a mutual friend. On my last day there, I got to head to a local park and photograph their family session. Afterwards, we all had an amazing meal and now I have some new friends I hope to visit again as soon as possible. Here are a few of my favorites.

Often times you photograph a lot of things, but not very often, at least not recently, have I shot stuff to use for both my portfolio as well as just for fun. That all changed the other day when my friend Kira was passing through and we got to shoot a variety of looks in just a short time. Below are some of my favorites and the square one was 46 images stitched together!

I get a message on Facebook one day, my buddy Jeff tells me he will be fairly close to me as he is taking a lil vacation with his girlfriend. I say, “oh awesome – let’s hook up and I’ll shoot the both of you “. That’s where he said he was bringing something shiny and blingy with him on the trip. So that’s when we started planning what day and when. It happened to be on a day I was free, so I headed down early to scout out some potential locations. Even a speeding ticket on the way up to Monterey couldn’t stop this event from happening! Being as the time they would arrive, the park we had selected would be closed, so onto back up location one. Cool park, but didn’t scream ” California ” , if you know what I mean. We decided to go with the beach in Carmel, as it’s absolutely beautiful and offered tons of places to shoot, well that, and Aubri loves the beach. Now mind you, the whole time this is going on, Jeff and I are speaking in code through texts , so the off chance Aubri reads one, she will be none the wiser as to what is going to go down. Things like, ” Oh yeah, the beach is really beautiful around 11th ave.” as well as ” I know when I go to the beach and take pictures, I usually travel light, with say a flannel and black camera bag. ”

Then it happened. I caught a glimpse of the two of then, and that is where my Oscar worthy performance came in, as well as 500 shots of random stuff, to pretend I was shooting waves, or surfers, birds what not. I saw them walk past me onto the rocks, he layed his camera down, and approached me to take pictures of them. I exclaimed I usually just shoot birds and landscapes , but I would do my best. That is when it happened. This is my first proposal and I feel like a crack addict as I want to do more and more. Seeing your friend asking his girlfriend to spend the rest of their lives together, right before your eyes, is something I will not soon forget. I mean, the happiness and tears weren’t just coming from them, if you know what I mean. I am so overjoyed that they have found each other and am looking forward to nothing less than utter and complete happiness from them both.

Thank you Aubri & Jeff for having me there!

This is when I spotted them, but she still had no clue what was up

What first started off many years ago as a fun modeling session, has over time turned into an amazing friendship. It then turned into photographing her wedding, and most recently, family photos and now maternity session. On a recent trip to South Jersey, I got to photograph my bestie’s maternity session in her 3rd trimester. After we shot at the park, we did a little boudoir/maternity which was fun because I have never combined the two.Maternity Session, New Jersey Maternity Photographer, Maternity Sessions in New Jersey Maternity Session, New Jersey Maternity Photographer, Maternity Sessions in New Jersey Maternity Session, New Jersey Maternity Photographer, Maternity Sessions in New Jersey Maternity Session, New Jersey Maternity Photographer, Maternity Sessions in New Jersey

I met Megan and Paul through a friend. Their session was a family /couples shoot/birth announcement/and photos with their dogs… all wrapped in one. I can’t begin to tell you how much I loved this session. Standing on a mountain, with 360 degree views of phenomenal landscapes, with a beautiful couple…it really can’t get better than this. I am so stoked about these images as it also marked a new way of seeing and editing. So for me, it meant a pivotal moment in terms of the way I shoot. Here is just a smathering of the images I shot. I literally want to put all of them up, but I digress… you will just have to be content with these =)

I hadn’t seen Christina and Dave since I photographed their engagement session a few months ago, so when I arrived at prep today and saw a bunch of photos on their wall from the session, it gave me the warm fuzzies to see my work on actual walls instead of just Facebook walls. Nikki, of the infamous Nikki & Chip Photography helped me photograph the details as well as Chip, before he headed to groom prep. We got to shoot in my old stomping grounds of Ocean Township, which both the couple and I are from . We did their first look at Deal Test Site and couldn’t have picked a better location if we tried. Below are a few of my favorite moments and I can’t wait to go through the rest of their images!

I want to thank Nikki and Chip for all their help today as I couldn’t have done it without them!

About once a year, photographers of all types head to Vegas for the annual WPPI conference which holds classes on all sorts of subjects as well as a trade show exhibiting new equipment, products and fancy gadgets. Having already been to it twice, my sole intention of going this time was to make use of the desert that Nevada is all too happy to provide. So after spending a few days at the conference, Nikki, Chip and I headed out to the Nelson Ghost Town about 45 mins away from the strip. A popular destination for photographers because of all the rustic elements, history and props to use in their photos. This time would be no different as the three of us explored all it had to offer. Truth be told, we barely scratched the surface of all it had to offer and are already planning to go back again during the next conference. We braved cacti, saw Jackrabbits, and had a beautiful background for our photos no matter where we turned. Below are a few of my favorites and can’t wait to go back!

On the ride to yesterday’s session, Bethany asked me a great question: “Why should someone get photographed? I know it’s understood for families, weddings, or headshots. But why else? I’m excited for my shoot, but it is kind of weird to be doing this for myself.”

It’s not the first time I’ve been asked that. Why would anyone subject themselves to the daunting feeling of having attention thrust upon them, not just from a photographer aiming a camera their way, but from the feedback they might receive.

My answer? Why does there need to be a reason? Why not just do it for the sake of doing it? But maybe it’s to mark a certain phase of life you’re in. Whether it be good, bad, or simply the fact that you’ve been down a long road, and made it to a point of success, or perhaps you’ve evolved into something more. Shit, it could be just because you’ve survived this far in everything you’ve been through.

Sometimes it’s all of those things and more. And that right there, was the answer to Bethany’s question. She’d been through so much over the years and had overcome it all to become a stronger, better version of herself. She also just wanted to have some fun! That’s what we celebrated with her session at Pacifica and Moss Beach. During the shoot, I was constantly reminded of the Walt Whitman quote from Song of Myself: “Do I contradict myself? Very well, then I contradict myself, I am large, I contain multitudes.”

Bethany’s three outfits brought out different aspects of her personality: There was the free spirit, the one that projected a more meditative feel , and another, final look, that showed her regal side. Multitudes. Each one distinct from the other.

To watch Bethany push through something she normally wouldn’t do, was incredibly enlightening. Not only was I enthralled by the bravery she needed to surpass the amount of misconceptions of what a shoot might be like, but I also saw those misconceptions disappear when she viewed her images. When someone places that amount of trust in you, there’s no greater feeling. Not to mention, seeing someone’s evolution through your camera is like watching scenes from a movie.

In the next week, I, too, will be getting photographed. I won’t lie, I’m a little apprehensive (it’s a strange feeling to be on the other side of the camera). But I am at a pivotal point in my life, and I want to show that side of me both personally and for my business, which to me, are indelibly linked. I completely trust my colleagues who will be shooting it (shoutout to Nikki & Chip Photography!). I am excited, yet curious to see if the people viewing my photos can feel the same thing I do, as well as see the version of me that I want to show.

Thank you, Bethany, for sharing the afternoon with me, and for giving me encouragement about my upcoming shoot. It was inspiring to learn just how much you’ve accomplished (with this session being one more thing to check off!). You knocked it out of the park and I’m looking forward to more shoots in the future.

Including the Love!

So what happens when a photographer from Jersey, that lives in California, flies to Texas and then drives a rental from Colorado to the quaint little town of Goliad? Well, he gets to photograph an awesome wedding on the couple’s property, That’s what. I flew down a few days early to scope out the lay of the land, and when I say that, I really mean try pecan pie for the first time, and subsequently a few days later. All joking aside, it was just a few months ago that Krystin + Jeff flew out my way to see the redwoods and have me document their engagement session(s). So on this trip, they showed me around their town which is rich in history as well as beautiful. While I was down there, I was treated so well , and everybody was extremely nice. I hope I can make it back there soon as I felt like I just scratched the surface of what Texas was all about.

Also wanna give a shoutout to Marco Aleman of Fusion Photography for kickin ass as a second shooter #goliad#texas#texasweddings#weddingsintexas#weddingday#TexasWeddingPhotographers#love #goliad#texas#texasweddings#weddingsintexas#weddingday#TexasWeddingPhotographers#love #goliad#texas#texasweddings#weddingsintexas#weddingday#TexasWeddingPhotographers#love
